Marathi Vyanjan (मराठी व्यंजने - Consonants)
Comprehensive guide to all 36 Devanagari consonants, their phonetic classifications from throat to lips, and interactive audio.
What are Marathi Vyanjan (व्यंजन म्हणजे काय?)
In the Marathi language, व्यंजन (Vyanjan - Consonant) refers to any sound that cannot be fully or clearly voiced without the assistance of an accompanying vowel (स्वर). When pronouncing a consonant, the exhaled air stream encounters partial or total contact/obstruction across vocal organs such as the tongue, throat, palate, teeth, or lips.
In written Devanagari grammar, pure consonants carry a small slant beneath them called a Halant (e.g. क्, ख्, ग्). When combined with the inherent vowel 'अ', they complete the full phonetic consonant (क, ख, ग).
